Mandy has recently returned from a trip to Tobago, staying at Castara Retreats…
I’ve just returned from an unforgettable trip to Tobago, and I’m still basking in the island’s peaceful energy, vibrant colours, and warm Caribbean sun. Whether you’re seeking tranquility, a break from the crowds, or a connection with nature, this hidden gem truly delivers—especially during the quieter months of May and June.
Exciting developments are underway on the island! The brand-new airport terminal is nearly complete and expected to open soon. From the air, it looked sleek and impressive—hinting at a more comfortable, modern, and efficient travel experience for future visitors. Tobago is clearly ready to welcome the world in style.
Our base for the week was Castara Retreats, nestled in the lush hillside above the charming village of Castara. We stayed in the Bird Song lodge—an eco-luxury hideaway where nature and comfort meet in perfect harmony. The weather was hot and sunny, with just a few refreshing tropical showers. The Caribbean Sea was calm and crystal-clear, perfect for a peaceful swim or a quiet moment with the waves. While conditions may vary during winter months, our early summer stay was idyllic.

While the village was blissfully quiet—with many restaurants taking a seasonal break—we enjoyed every dinner at the Caribbean Kitchen, the on-site restaurant at Castara Retreats. The menu rotates every few days, so while the selection is small, every dish felt freshly inspired and lovingly prepared. I highly recommend booking ahead, especially during peak season to snag one of the tables with the best views. Local prices were very reasonable: a beer for less than £2, and a tropical cocktail for under £10. While cards are accepted at the Retreats, Tobago remains a cash-friendly island, so bringing local currency (TT dollars) is smart. I ordered mine online and collected them from the Post Office—easy and convenient.
We embraced island life by preparing breakfast and lunch with fresh produce from the village supermarket and mini-markets. It’s mango season, so we were literally picking ripe mangoes from the trees! Castara Retreats welcomed us with thoughtful touches: milk, homemade bakes, teas, coffee, and even a few cleaning supplies. The team is moving toward more sustainable practices, like switching to Turkish fouta towels that are easier to wash and dry. A small gesture with a big impact.
For a truly local treat, order fresh bread and banana cake from Derricia—a former staff member who now runs her own bakery business. Her banana bread? Quite possibly the best I’ve ever tasted. She also makes celebration cakes, and the one I saw for a fellow guest’s 83rd birthday looked divine!
Tobago is as much about inner peace as it is about outward beauty. We enjoyed morning yoga sessions with panoramic views and relaxing massages in the wellness studio—both of which I highly recommend pre-booking. Even if you’re not attending the full November yoga retreat, the drop-in sessions are a perfect daily ritual.
The property itself is looking vibrant and fresh, with new signage, colourful paint updates, and even a reception office where guests can change money or arrange activities. There’s also a handy shower and washroom area for those checking out before an evening flight—great attention to detail!
Two new additions—Hideaway and River Breeze—have joined the Castara Retreats family. Tucked beneath the wellness studio near the rainforest, they’re ideal for nature lovers. I’d recommend Hideaway for its spacious layout and beautiful terrace. These lodges feature stylish, modern shower rooms—a glimpse into the future upgrades planned for the rest of the property.
